Introduction Course – Gas Detection and Confined Space Entry

This e-learning course provides a practical and easy-to-understand introduction to working in enclosed spaces and using portable gas detectors. Participants gain a clear understanding of what makes enclosed spaces hazardous, how gas measurements should be carried out, and which barriers must be in place to carry out entry in a safe and controlled manner. The course can form part of the company's documented training in gas detection and safe entry.

The content is based on experience from actual incidents and recommendations from recognised sources, including:

• IMO Resolution A.1050(27) – guidelines for safe entry into enclosed spaces aboard ships

• Enclosed Space Entry Guidelines – practical guidance on risk assessment and safe execution of work in enclosed spaces

• Norwegian Regulation No. 703 – Performance of Work – requirements for the safe performance of work, including work in hazardous and enclosed spaces

• Norwegian Regulation No. 706 – Action and Limit Values – limit values and action levels for hazardous gases and contaminants in the working environment

• ATEX regulations – requirements for work and equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres

The course also covers the most commonly used types of portable gas detectors, typical sensors and their limitations, as well as basic principles for calibration, bump testing and maintenance.

The course is theoretical and does not provide formal certification as an entry supervisor. It does not replace the company's own risk assessments, measurements or work permits, and all practical work must always be carried out in accordance with internal procedures and under the supervision of the responsible person (for example the entry supervisor, captain or work supervisor).
